The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) plans to put up a fish port at Barangay Montserrat, Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental.
This is part of the government’s effort to achieve sustainable development of the fisheries sector.
The fishport establishment Project is a BFAR Funded Project technically recommended by the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA). The project will be operated by the Local Government Unit. This will be among the five fishport to be constructed next year.
Since 1998, Governor Generoso has been untiringly providing information and data to the agency.
"After 18 long years our efforts have been paid off", says Narciso Roscom, FMU Coordinator -GovGen.
The project is worth 25 million Pesos that will include office space/structure, docking and landing area and parking space covering about 2 hectares. Cold storage and other post-harvest facilities are also included in the project.
Governor Generoso is one of the major fish producing municipalities in the entire province. It is considered to have the second longest coastline in the Davao gulf where 14 out of 20 were coastal barangays. Most people living in these barangays engage in fishing.
The establishment of fishport has been a dream come true to all GovGenians. Where there is a fishport, developments would surely follow.
“I believed that the realization of the project will open more livelihood opportunities for people from the entire municipalities and nearby localities,” Mayor Orencia said.
He further stated, that by that time that this fishport will be finished, abundance of fish in the area will be given a big boost. Proper fish handling, sanitary techniques and centralized packaging will be practiced. Manpower demands will be increased, business opportunities heightened thus, maximizing income generation in the municipality.
Presentation of the perspective to the Municipal Mayor Vicente D. Orencia was done in the morning of November 7, 2013 at the Municipal Mayor’s Office, Poblacion, Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental. It was presented by Engr. Nonie Sumaliling of PFDA, Manila, witnessed by some BFAR personnel, LGU Heads of Offices and MFU staff.
The project is expected to start its construction early 2014.
