Fishing and farming are the major sources of livelihood in the area. The local fishermen contributed almost of the total municipal fish production which is coming from our traditional fishing grounds within our territorial waters.
Based on municipal fishery data gathered, it showed that most of the traditional marine fishing grounds in the area have signs of degradation and damages and fish production is declining. The alarming status of the municipal water resources is serious which needs immediate action to be undertaken, like regulations of fishing efforts, stop competition of marginal and commercial fishermen fishing within the area.
The series of community consultation were conducted in close coordination with the Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management Council (FARMC) and with existing fisherfolk organizations in the locality in order to come up a participative resolution to this concern, hence, Drift gill net fishing, Tuna handline project and Fish aggregating device (Payaw) establishment were realized thru the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) with a total project cost of P400, 010.00.
The President of the different fisherfolks associations: PUSAGAMA, BUSFFA, MAFISA and TIFISA expressed their gratitude being the recipient of the project.
Meanwhile, Mr. Albert E. Degamo, the Provincial Chief Labor Employment officer said that the Department of Labor and Employment were so glad to see and hear their complements and appreciation in their small intervention to uplift the lives of the fishermen.
“I hope and I’m also looking forward that you will take good care of the resources given to us by the Department of labor and Employment. With your cooperation and full support of our Local Government Unit, it will surely become fruitful and be of use for a long period of time”, Mayor Vicente Orencia said.
The program was culminated by the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between DOLE XI, represented by Albert E. Degamo, the Provincial Chief Labor & Employment Officer, the Local Government Unit of Governor Generoso represented by Hon. Vicente D. Orencia, Municipal Mayor and Shirley O. Ceniza, PESO Manager. It was witnessed by some DOLE XI Officials, barangay Captains and Barangay Officials of the recipient barangays and the President of 4 Fisherfolks Associations.
