Farmers of Governor Generoso and San Isidro unite against Brontispa PDF Print E-mail

In the year 2004, Brontispa also known as coconut leaf beetle, an invasive pest affecting coconut and other ornamental species, a native in Indonesia was believed to be first introduced in the country, presumably via importation of ornamental palms. In a data provided by the Philippine Coconut Authority a total of 281 municipalities from 47 provinces and 11 regions are already infested with Brontispa and it appears that the infestation has already reached Governor Genoroso, Davao Oriental. Traces of infestations were seen in the five hectare coconut farm of Mr. Henry Dizon.

With this alarming situation, the Local Government Unit of Governor Generoso through its Community eCenter (CeC) and Farmer's Information Technology Services (FITS), Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO), Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), and Southern Mindanao Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium (SMARRDEC) immediately held a one day forum to educate the coco-growers of Governor Generoso and San Isidro on how to prevent and on how to contain brontispa in the area so that it will not spread in the nearby areas and municipalities. Best ways on how to control the pests such as pruning, clean culture, proper disposal of infested coconut palms or parts and the use of fungi, Metarrhizium and Beauveria and the parasitoid Ascodes hispinarum were properly introduced to the farmers.

According to Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) the coconut industry in the country is one of the leading sectors of our agricultural economy. A total area of 3.26 million hectares (M ha) is devoted to coconut, making it as the major source of livelihood in 68 of the 70 provinces of the country. The Philippines has earned the niche as the top supplier of coconut products and by products in the world market contributing to estimated $ 800 million net foreign earnings to sustain the economic lives of some 3.5 million coconut farmers and their families.
